The origin is apparently a 1984 article from German magazine 'Das Ohr'

The recent proponent of the idea is 'Dertonarm', the designer of the UNI-Protractor and a regular contributor/lightning rod over on Audiogon. The 231.5mm spindle-to-pivot distance is not the controversial aspect - it is instead the 'alignment' which he has proposed to use with the FR-64S using that particular P2S distance. This alignment was attacked mercilessly on the forum for a while, in particular by one person, and eventually I had a crack at figuring it out by reading between the lines of what Dertonarm said.

The 'alignment' he has proposed is one which produces an arc across the record which resembles a Lofgren B in shape, but is shifted inward over the record - something like a cross between a Stevenson and a Lofgren B. It is one which appears would be very useful for records which have a very short runout area - i.e. records with DIN parameters - and where the music is quite dynamic in the final couple of minutes (i.e. final 10% of a side). It has lower tracking distortion than the Baerwald or Lofgren B alignments based on the original manufacturer effective length/P2S, and tracking distortion is sharply lower in the last half of the record.

My investigation into the arm geometry starts on 3/23/2011 on p5 of the linked thread (my moniker there is "T_bone"). It goes into the details of how the tracking distortion is different than the traditional geometries based off the manufacturer's original stated specs. I did not communicate with Dertonarm about 'his' geometry until after I wrote all that - and did so because I ordered his protractor and wanted to check if I had deduced the offset angle correctly (I did). I did this effectively to end the squabbling on the forum, but it did not change much - the sniping appears to continue unabated.

The next time I set up an FR-64S, I will definitely be trying this alignment. It looks like it would be quite decent-sounding. Others have already tried the alignment and appreciate it. It is important to note, however, that it is only appropriate if one shares his priorities and assumptions (i.e. longer records which end inside of 60mm inner groove, and the goal of minimized tracking distortion in the last few minutes of the record).
