Hi Paul,An excellent evaluation that in many ways mirrors my own comparison between the Denon 103 (without the R or anything else) and the Shelter 501 II. This is all from memory done a few years ago.
The use of the Denon brought to mind the expression "technicolor" that I've seen applied to some cartridges. The Shelter had a more refined sound, especially in the higher frequencies. This was far more to my long term enjoyment. My tastes are toward classical music; if they were otherwise I might prefer the Denon. In any event the Denon is an outstanding buy. I have to credit Arthur Salvatore for first pointing me, and a lot of us, in these directions. Upgrades to my JMW 12 arm have improved the Shelter even further.
