I, have seen this on my 1229 and a 1215. Hard to explain put lets give it a go. Remove the platter to lighten the unit as you must turn the unit bottom side up. For safety, remove the headshell off the arm for safety. So you won't accidently break off the stylus on the cartridge. Been there.
After you have done the above, remove the main unit from the wood base. Carefully turn over the unit. so the bottom is up. If you can and this is tricky, move the arm back and forth (towards the center spindle and back) I have also done this with turntable on its side while moving the arm. You should see a lever moving on the underside from the arm to a black two inch square plastic box with a screw in the center. Inside is the power switch. They hang up and stay on from time to time. It can be cured. If you have an ohm meter put it on resistance and put the leads on the plug. If on, you will see it on the meter. Off it shows nothing. Moving the arm the meter should show a circuit when the needle moves to the right and off when swing the arm back to its rest.One screw holds on the black cover, remove the screw and black cover. I fixed this by putting a small amount of lithium grease on the lever where it goes into the black plastic box. It should cure the "on-off" problem. Both the 1229 and 1215 responded to this fix.
Hope this cures you problem. And I hope you understand my directions.
If you have questions, email me. I have three of these Duals and once they are setup they run well. Once greased, put on the platter and headshell and fire it up and let it cycle to off. Now remove the platter and see if the motor has stopped. Repeat several times to make sure the grease worked. The motor should now stop. Another way to check it is to remove the platter and move the arm towards the spindle (motor comes on) and back to the rest ( motor stops) It should work. Good luck
