Clearaudio Aurum Beta Phono Cartridge

Interesting . . . I have the Beta S and experience neither of your complaints. Once broken in, the Beta S displays robust bass and, with my current phono stage, seemingly deeper bass than my CD player. (With my previous phonostage, it was about equal.) Bass definition is exemplary, as shown, for example by rendering of bass kickdrum.

I've never had a surface noise issue; although I don't use headphones. Have you played around with VTA/SRA? The S seems to be pretty sensitive to that.

I just re-installed the Clearaudio after an unsuccessful venture with a high-end Dynavector, which clearly was an unhappy marriage with my phonostage.

I may yet pop for the Virtuoso, which Don T and some others have praised. But, I'm in no hurry. As it is, my vinyl setup sounds way better than my CD; so a rational thing to do would be to spend more $$$ to upgrade the digital side first.

Nice review, BTW -- no intent to crticise from me. Other inmates own this cart or the S; hopefully they'll weigh in.
