You can never relinquish hope that Floyd will have a flat on the way to the match. Or I suppose a piano could fall on him. Maybe some day, in the hereafter, the Devil will make him go 15 rounds with the real Hit Man, Tommy Hearns. Then we’ll see who’s a Pretty Boy (of course, they’ll both be dead, so it might be moot).

Parenthetically, it will interest no one to know that when I was around 11, my parents became friendly with Rocky Marciano, to whom my father was introduced by a mutual racketeer buddy. When my parents brought the recently-retired champ to their country club (as you have undoubtedly heard, Marciano was a notorious tightwad who was never known to pick up a check, or decline a free dinner-and the food at the club was very good), it was the social coup of the season. I was in the champ’s presence a time or two, and he once let me hang out on the chaise next to his at the Algiers Hotel pool in Miami. What a nice man he was-unless you were unfortunate enough to be Jersey Joe (to name just one of 49 victims).
