I have done test on audio extraction with discs having green paint , rings etc attached , the puters did a poor job of exctracting audio at a decent speed , some NOT allowing audio extraction at 1x speed (IE would be error prone on actual playback) .
Removing the paint/rings etc allowed proper extraction , circumcising the CD (a friend of mine made his own machine) allowed even faster extraction than before , which leads me to extrapolate that the dimensional stability of a Cd is important in this regard.
I would imagine that it would also extend to conventional playback as Digital Audio Extraction is merely this in accelerated form.
In all likelyhood the trued CD requires less work by errror correction and tracking devices and thus removes a form of PS induced jitter or artefacts.
I doubt it is something to do with light propogation etc.
