Re: Valve Amplification Company AVATAR Integrated Amplifier (Tube)

Brian,
Thanks for you thoughtful response. I agree with in regards to your thoughts on the run-of-the-mill tubes, 12AX7 & 12AU7. It would be nice to try others in the circuits but I'm fine with them. I would rather have the ability to get more in the future verses something that is next to impossible to find. I don't know enough about electronics to know what tubes would work better and my question would be how much better to sacrifice availability? I don't know there may be others that are redily available which yield better sonics but I am ok with the 12AX's and AU's.

I'm not sure why VTL told me the information regarding tube rolling but it wasn't the dealer telling me that it was Bea at VTL. The only thing I could think of was they wanted me to buy there tubes. As for the solid state sound I'm not sure why and don't get me wrong I could have lived with the amp if I had to but it just wasn't what I was looking for.

As for the seperates I don't have the space nor the desire to use them at this point. I'm sure there are advantages but I prefer the simplistic approach. Maybe once my kids are out of college and I have more money to burn I'll try that route.

As for the triode verse ultra-linear it could have been many factors. The speakers I had previously needed a lot of power and that may have been part of the problem. My Jolida was a KT88/6550 based amp and I truly enjoyed it. I never tried it in triode mainly because of the power issues. I will try it again with the Celius and see if my impressions are still the same. They have an efficiecy rating of 92 compared to 89 for my old Phase Tech's so as you indicate I'm sure that will be of benifit.

As for the bass weakness you are right on target. I felt compelled to put something in the box even though I'm VERY pleased with the bass I get from both my Celius and the Avatar. I'm sure there are products that would provide tighter bass but as I said I'm quite happy with the low end I have.

Thanks again and good luck with your desire to work at VAC!

Mark
