2nd harmonic isn't always good

There was a great thread on this subject over at diyAudio a little while back. One poster mentioned that if you play a note and its 2nd harmonic simultaneously on the piano, the ear will insert the 3rd harmonic, even though it isn't there. Guess 3rd isn't so bad afterall?

Another poster talked about his work on designing distortion pedals for guitar; the worst sounding circuit generated all 2nd harmonic.

Now, harmonics of low frequencies, due to transformer saturation and/or lack of inductance is another story. I think some people (myself included) find the bass response of the typical tube amp to be very pleasant sounding - yet the bass response of the typical tube amp is god awful, in terms of THD. And on top of it, I've only run push-pull amps for the last few years, no SE, so that extra distortion is predominantly odd order...

Food for thought.

Joel
