RE: Do high-end speakers over do it?

A question would be were you hearing a recording you were familiar with?
Depending on what studio monitors it was mixed on, it could be the recording. For example on small monitors that don't have extension, recordings are often mixed bass heavy when played on actual full spectrum loudspeakers.

In the 70's there was a Capricorn studio who's studio monitors were apparently out of polarity and were the recordings of that era. This was obvious on the old pre-amps that often had a polarity inversion switch where one way sounded normal with bass and phantom image and the other not.
