Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: What is the interaction of the loudspeaker and amplifier?

Electricity is defined by electrons flowing in a wire. A musical signal alternates in polarity from positive to negative. The black lead from the amplifier carries flowing electrons to and from the amplifier just like the red lead. When electrons flow to the speaker on the red lead, those same electrons flow back to the amplifier on the black lead and vice versa.

If you still don't understand how the amplifier and speakers interact, you have two choices. You can either begin a study of electrical theory or you can simply listen to music and enjoy it.

Do you understand how a television works? Most people don't know how a television works but we all watch TV and enjoy it.

Do you even understand how an electrical light-bulb works? The light-bulb works exactly like your amplifier and speakers. There are two wires to the light-bulb; one is ground or neutral, and the other provides 115-volt, 60-Hz alternating electrical power. Electrons flow back and forth on both wires just like they flow back-and-forth on both wires connecting your speaker to your amplifier. Only one wire contains the electrical signal and the other wire is ground, just like your amplifier and speakers.

Good luck,
John Elison
