Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

What is the interaction of the loudspeaker and amplifier?

I am trying to get an understanding of the interaction of the amplifier and the loudspeaker in basic, layman's terms. For the purposes of this inquiry, let us assume a standard dynamic loudspeaker.

I have read that the music signal from the red side of the amplifier terminal is what causes the voice coil to be attracted or repulsed in the voice coil gap thus pumping the cone backwards and forwards to create audible vibrations on the air. If that is correct, I understand that. However, the voice coil-amplifier is a circuit is it not? So what happens to that part of the circuit represented by the black wire that connects the voice coil back to the black terminal on the amplifier?

Thanks for informed and informative replies!
