I disagree with you regarding the new Dynaudio Contours. They are much more accurate transducers than the old ones. Their frequency response is almost perfectly linear compared to the old ones, and they also have a much higher sensitivity (+3dB), which gives them a larger dynamic range and a more natural reproduction of the signal. I must say that you are the first person I know to say that the old ones are better.I've found that many people like the colored (distorted) sound produced by a bright treble. A lot of people also prefer over-saturated pictures, but I don't. Colorations are not the goal of Hi-Fi (high fidelity). Prominent high frequencies often give a false impression of high resolution, but this is not accurate. Speaker makers know this and some of them design their products to impress buyers.
Dynaudio speakers may not impress at first, but after a thorough audition it becomes obvious that their sound is a natural one. Years ago I also had the oppurtunity to listen to non-coax Thiels and found them to be over-bright, but if you like that, than it's your choice.
