The midrange is small but is crossed over very high for a mid so it doesn't need to move much air. Call it a sub-tweeter!. I believe the tweeter is driven. The rubber decouples the cone portion of the driver from the central dome at higher frequencies. This is a form of technique used back in the 50's if I recall right. By the way, I am not a Thiel fan and not a fan of mechanical crossovers; I'm just trying to set the technical side right. Most thiels I've heard sound like you describe them to me.
