Charles - Unmapping with XP is a solid technique. I use it exclusively with XP. If you do this, even WMP will not recognize that there is an audio device. Only certain players can be used, those explicitly select the device, like Foobar or Jriver. Other devices that use the Windows audio stack to find the device will not work. Here are instructions for the Off-Ramp, but I have used them with many other PCI and USB devices, including Lynx AES 16, Tascam US-144 and others. Firewire devices dont work this way, so you need ASIO to bypass kmixer with them. I am not a fan of ASIO because every one sounds different and not as good as unmapping. Firewire devices such as Fireface 400 work best with Mac IME.

For XP, Go to Control Panel - System Hardware - Device Manager - Sound Video and Game Controllers – Empirical 1.1 (or your device name) - Right-Click and select Properties - Audio Devices – Empirical 1.1 (or your device name) - Properties - Set "Do not use audio features" and set "Do not map through this Device" You will need to then reboot.

Then if you change it back to mapped, then you must re-boot.

I exclusively use Directsound with unmapping. If you are using Foobar 0.8.3 as a player, you can sometimes get better results with Directsound2 plug-in.

If you email me, I can reply with Foobar 0.8.3 and Directsound2 attached, and give you SRC for upsampling to 24/96 as well. This is my reference for PC audio.
