Subsidies

"once you pay your taxes it isn't your money anymore"
"you didn't subsidize anything"

The only money that is actually "mine" is the money which I keep or give to other people voluntarily. Any other money, taken from me by force or neccessity (taxes, housing, transportation, food, etc.), wasn't really mine to begin with.

Putting a finer point on it, the various government entities can easily raise my total tax bill from say 30 percent to 80 percent, just because they decide to. So, in reality, the only money which is really mine is the money which the government and necessities don't take from me. I suppose I could just go "off the grid" and live in a homemade hut somewhere, but that would be stupid and not a decent way to live. So, I live in the U.S. as a middle class person and pay my taxes and other expenses.

Where do my tax payments go? They go to a variety of places: They go to the school district so that a lot of kids can get "free" breakfast and lunch. Is it really "free"? Are they paying for it? No. It's only free to them because I, and many other people, are paying for it. In other words, we taxpayers are subsidizing their diet. At the Federal level, oil companies get tax breaks for their exploration and drilling efforts. According to your "logic", I'm not subsidizing them. Nor am I subsidizing farming companies which get tax breaks for behaving in certain ways. Etc., etc.

The important point is this: Government at all levels need a certain amount of money to do what they want to do. It gives "breaks" to some, and therefore have to increase revenue from others, also known as subsidies. Who doesn't get that?
