Hello! While it may seem silly for me to reply to this rather old thread, since there are nuts (like me) that read the archives, it may serve a purpose.
I just wanted to speak to one aspect of your post, namely your assertion that high-passing his backloaded horn at 100-150 would result in a great increase in sound quality. In two words: Not likely.
The impedance matching that horn-loading affords means that the doppler distortion you cite is virtually non-existent. I've owned a number of such speakers (Lamhorns, C&C Bens, Beauhorns, and more) and one quickly learns that even when pumping out 50-60 Hz bass (about their limit) at loud volumes there is virtually no discernible cone movement at all. The driver is barely working.
So, you'd gain little by putting a crossover in that range. What would you lose? Likely quite a lot.
Furthermore, cutting off the speaker at 100-150 Hz entirely removes the motivation for horn-loading. If the speaker is not going to work below 150 Hz there is virtually no point in the horn, which starts right about there.
Ironically, perhaps, my current speakers are open baffles. But I don't like the majority of OB speakers I've heard, while the majority of single-driver backhorns sound pretty good to me.
