RE: Is the Karlsons for me?

It's fair to say a little of both, but the same could be said about horns. Karlsons might be seen as equivalent to a midbass horn, but with broader dispersion.

The original K15 has the best chance of success, IMHO. The smaller K12 is somewhat more finicky WRT driver choice and tuning. As has already been pointed out, this is an enclosure best suited for people who enjoy tinkering and tuning, and this can make all the difference with these.

After trying a bunch of different formats, my favorite was the K15 with a wideband woofer and a 1" comp driver feeding a K-tube on top. I've heard coax sound great also.

There are a number of 'improved' experimental Karlson designs at the Karlson forum.

Modern drivers often have highish Qts and Fs which is less appropriate than typical vintage specs. Obviously though, one can pick and choose. This one looks pretty good at first glance. http://www.usspeaker.com/eighteensound-15MB700-1.htm A very rough idea of driver appropriateness can be had by estimating as a BP6. The bandpass gain region of a K15 will balance the rising response.
