I believe that ambiophonics can get you much further along for the soundstaging of music than stereo or most multichannel alone. I actually have not tried this, but virtually all who have rave at the improved soundstage effects.

The transparency is another issue. That could be a function of your speakers. Open baffle speakers will do a better job with this than boxed speakers. Also passive preamps such as autoformers or transformers are much more likely to get you there than any active preamp.
