... most people these days don't want the slab-like looks of wide speakers (so customer acceptance higher for narrow ones) and because so many people now routinely resort to subs to add bass to modern bass-mediocre speakers? How many modern speakers still include 10 or 12" bass drivers? How many people buy modern speakers that use 5.5 to 7" bass drivers after an impressive demo, only to find they seem "strained" after longer listening - and they add subs?
I much prefer speakers with beefy drivers producing plenty of "relaxed" bass where no sub is needed, but often they tend to be wider, or have their bass drivers in the sides of the enclosure.
My current speakers have twin 12" drivers that face forward, but skilful design means the enclosures are only 13.5" wide - and 107 dB sensitivity, though it's a horn system for mid and top. Wider I would resist and if main speakers can't deliver deep and natural bass, I'd look elsewhere rather than add the complication and expense of subs.
