RE: Makes "solo instruments sound "too BIG" ?

I used to own Maggie 1.6 speakers.

A professional reviewer (I cannot now remember which one) once noted that dipole planar speakers like Maggies have a tendency to unnaturally enlarge images, while typical monopole box speakers have a tendency to unnaturally shrink them down.

With Maggies, it depends somewhat on the dispersion pattern of the instruments featured in the recording. Then, the dispersion pattern of planar dipole speakers exaggerate those spatial cues present in certain types of recordings, I think.

- Stringed instruments ? Not so much.

- Wind instruments like trumpets and trombones ? Sometimes yes.

- Vocalists ? Yes.

OTOH, very large instruments played in cavernous spaces (like pipe organ) can sound wonderfully spacious.
