Classical string recordings sometimes sound too bright because . . .

. . . of microphone placement. Microphones are often suspended OVER the string section of an orchestra, so they catch the full "on axis" response of the violins, which is directed upwards. The audience, however, is listening to the violins from approximately 90 degrees "off axis," and does not hear all those upward-directed shrill harmonic overtones that the microphones catch.

A playback system which compensates by rolling off the highs will therefore muffle the HF output of all the other instruments. Another argument in favor of treble controls, which allow you to adjust the balance to suit different recordings.
