RE: As a mainly classical listener, I like speed and clarity in a system

Preferred catalog of music is not always the only factor to be considered. One's main source of material is a big factor. I have had mostly tube electronics from Mac or ARC for years, but as time went by, I had to consolidate music and TV/theater. Finally I had twin MC 275's which were great for any music, but I watch more TV than listen to music, and I just could not afford to keep $7000+ in amps for 1/4 of the time. (I got a Mac 1700 receiver for TV). So, I had to go to transistor amps to keep costs down in investment, sound, and tube usage.
So I got a Mac 452 then 462, both with a very un-classic-McIntosh sound, clear, detailed, and very fast. I think it works well with all music, echoing what CfL (and others) said about the needed clarity for classical music.
Back to source-material tailoring, a shout-out for the Mac 1700, a great amp for TV and movies. It's very kind to voices - even the most shrill-voiced shrew suddenly has her rasp toned down, and the most thin-voiced male announcer suddenly has a little baritone resonance added to it. Of course it is not a miracle worker - for example the loud, high-pitched bark of, say, Dan Orlovsky on ESPN is beyond redemption. If you want warmth, it's not hard get it through the source electronics. I use a CJ PV9 to get some tube magic in vinyl.
