The answer for me is a definite yes. I listen to most types of music, but my preferences change over time. I'll get really into a certain genre for a while and then drift to something else, and it does affect what I buy. I've made mistakes auditioning and purchasing new equipment when I let my musical preferences of the day have too much influence, and I've taken the depreciation losses when my tastes have changed. For example, when I first started getting into high end audio I was listening to a lot of symphonic music and I really enjoyed a big, deep soundstage. To get the soundstage I wanted, I was using speakers that were too small for the room and sacrificed scale and dynamics.
More recently, I spent a few years exploring a lot of electronic music, particularly ambient and trance. During this period, I was really listening for fast transient response, attack, space between notes, lack of time smear. I bought a pair of Wilson Benesch speakers that I loved with psy-trance, fusion, and other fast music but they were not very enjoyable with most pop and rock.
