In college most of my closest friends were jazz fans so a half-dozen of us made the trip to the Detroit Jazz Festival at Cobo Arena in summer of '61 or '62. I didn't necessarily consider Julie to be a jazz vocalist but I loved her looks and voice so I was delighted she was on the bill that night.
The hour grew late and my friends were getting antsy to leave (hour and a half drive back) but Julie hadn't come on yet. I persuaded them to wait for one more next act, but it was not her. So they gave me the choice - stay and see her, but find my own way home, or leave with them. Even at that young age I was not venturesome enough to consider hitchhiking out of downtown Detroit at 1 AM. And so I missed my chance to see her live.
I do have a few of her LPs I bought in the early '60s, but always regretted not hearing her live.
