I would try speaker cable first it's lower cost. Kimber and Audioquest are both good quality. About the 6DJ8s

They can get very expensive, fast. You will spend more than you paid for the preamp. Say, for sets of Amperex Holland Bugle Boys or Telefunken West German ECC88 / 6DJ8 tubes. The best will run you around $200 each tube. Yes, they will be a step up from the likes of Sovtek tubes. However, I would suggest the speaker wire first because it is best to match the same brand of interconnect to speaker wire, although few seem to do so. That Transparent speaker cable you are using is sort of known for having the opposite character to the silver interconnect cable being used between your source and preamp. Which I would suggest is not the best of choices in my opinion. I take it you're having some issues with the upper midrange and highs being a little closed in and dark sounding? First try some simple, for cost savings, entry level speaker wire to see if that produces any change for the better and then you can go for the rare NOS (new old stock) tubes.
