Well, more bands is supposed to be better. I briefly had one of the ancient [Made in USA !!!] dbx single-band units. More recently, I sometimes use the expander feature on a Behringer DEQ2496 (threshold = 0 db) but only a few fixed settings are useful: 1.1, 1.2, 1.4 (equal to 10%, 20%, 40%) expansion. You can (indeed should?) set attack/decay to 0 msec, 20 msec (min.) I still like the dbx better for its fiddle-ability.
