Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: Stereophile update on the Moon Eclipse...

It is a very favorable follow-up. The writer (Brian Damkroger) mentions it has been his reference player since it's release in April 2001 and goes on to discuss the HDCD chip
problem which decreased the original player's sonics (and could be bypassed with a
jumper between the two digital output/inputs on back). He does in fact talk about the new units which have the HDCD chip taken out (totally new circuit board design) and also there is a new PS upgrade. Also, the new units have the Philips CD Pro 2 transport mechanism (which takes care of some troublesome CD's being read with the original CD Pro 1 drive). He goes on to say that essentially the player remains in the top-flight PCM players ("it does everything well and it's incredible strengths in the area of spatial reproduction and detail resolution are, if anything, stronger than the original"). He does mention again the "cool" tonal character which I guess is his way of saying it is "not totally neutral or transparent". I own the new version and I certainly would not characterize it as "cool" but is system specific as always. I recently\chose this player over the Audio Aero Capitole MKII (P4) and the Mephisto II
and it is simply astonishing in it's performance. Hope that helps.
