Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: I'm seriously looking at the Mytek............................

In my setup I use digital volume control when playing digital recordings. This definitely sounds better than using the analog volume control, presumably because it cuts out a bunch of op-amps. I feed direct to my powered speakers and I have the internal jumpers in the Mytek set for 6 dB lower output. This means that a typical digital (or analog) volume control setting for natural recordings would be about -18 dB. If more attenuation were needed at some point the analog volume control would sound better. If I had a separate preamp with volume control then I would probably put the Mytek volume control in bypass mode.

The PCM playback filters in the Mytek are the stock ones supported by the SABRE chip. They are OK, but not outstanding. I found that upsampling to 176/24 or 192/24 makes 44/16 material sound better. All PCM sounds better, including 192/24, by upsampling in my PC to DSD128. I use HQPlayer, which also is doing some bass management at the original sampling rate. HQPlayer has a large collection of filters.

The Mytek has two definite quirks. First, the menus are a bit quirky to use. I found it necessary to play with the unit for a couple of hours and then gave up and RTFM. After that, no problem. Second, it takes an absurdly long time to break in and sound its best. When I first got it I had heard that this could take 500 hours. This seemed crazy, but that was my conclusion, also.
