Fun to read a review after all these years. I looked at this player in 2002 when I put my system together.I ended up getting a Marantz 6000 modded by Heart. I rolled in 4-5 different sets of tubes over the first three months (it came with Sovtek 6922 I think) and settled on Amperex Bugle Boy 6dj8 (Hewlett Packard).
It still sounds great. Sure, the Heart lacks a little in lowest bass, and highest highs, but gets all the important stuff (40-8,000hz) really, really right for the price point.
I've listened to the Heart cd player for only about 1000 hours. The reason that is so low is that I do a lot of concentrated listening directly out of an 18 yr. old Sony ES cdp next to my bed with Sennheiser HD560 (now HD 580 headphones). The Heart's headphone out plug is disabled for some reason related to sound quality.
My days of feeding a cdp with a silver disc are pretty much on the wane though. I've recently converted most of my cds first into a lossless format called FLAC, and then from FLAC into a second format for loading onto an ipod of mp3 player called LAME mp3 v0. I play out of a pda called Sansa Clip 4gib, into a portable amp (that also plugs into the wall) and into HD 580s, bypassing both my cdps entirely.
