Re: Parasound P-3 Preamplifier (SS)

Thanks. I installed the balanced cables and replaced speaker wires at the same time. I didn't have any reason to replace the speaker wires, but thought I'd go ahead and do so because they were 15-year-old Monsters and might have oxidized somewhat.

However, after I installed the balanced but before the speaker wires, I noticed a good bit more gain. After the speaker wires, the increase was even greater. Where I used to listen at between 20-26 (in my small room) on the P3, I now listen at between 16-22. I figure the balanced connections provide more amplitude and hopefully greater s/n ratio. Re: the speaker wires (although 10 gauge like the old ones), I noticed the actual individual wires inside are much thicker.

Anyway, sorry for the long ramble. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was using a cheap Sony Receiver prior to the Parasound, so it's quite a big change. You're right that the Parasound is much more revealing, and it's now pointed up the new weak link in my system: a Denon CD player, which is the next item to be replaced (by a Maverick, Sony XA777 or similar SACD player). I listen to classical, electronic, and some rock.

Regards,
Doug
