Your description of the sound describes the results I get with my set-up of Meitner BiDat run balanced direct into the Spectron Musician II Digital Amp. The BiDat varies the actual voltage gain of the DAC, rather than attenuate the DAC output.Results are jaw-dropping as you describe. Most often it seems you really don't know what you're missing by adding unnecessary components.
That Paul McGowan is a crafty fellow. Someone should take one of these PowerCell modules to a hospital for an MRI scan.
FWIW, I bought one of the first PS Audio P300s, and it recently gave up the ghost.
