Thanks for the additional detail.I am not dissatisfied with the PCA-2 preamp. When I compare the HCA-2 amp vs the Odyssey Stratos or the Krell KSA50S, I find the HCA-2 a little less transparent, less dynamic, and less extended in the treble. This is while using the PCA-2 with the above mentioned amps.
While the Krell is a very dynamic, open, and extended (treble) amp with monster bass (please don't sue me Monter Cable), it can almost be called 'aggressive' - which is ideal for heavy hitting rock 'n roll.
I find the Odyssey Stratos to fit sonically somewhere in-between the Krell and the HCA-2. If PS Audio improved their new line of digital amps, I'm definitely interested in auditioning one someday. I need a *small* cool running amp with big sound.
