For me it has most to do with how loud and clean I want the very low frequencies to sound. I found I couldn't get it sounding good in the really low frequencies, at volumes I prefer to play at, until the whole neighborhood can hear it. To pressurize the whole neighborhood with unclipped low frequency takes quite a bit of power, depending on the speakers capacity to reproduce it. I ran with around 1200W per channel for many years, would have liked even more if I'd have had it. My speakers at the time were incredibly inefficient.
