If the OP's 405 was a 1984 model it is most likely to be a 405-2, better than the original 405 but still not good enough.
Poor power supply, bad parts quality and a nasty protection circuit were the main bugaboos.Anyone using one of these with their ESLs (or any other speaker) has *never* heard what the speakers are truly capable of. In standard form these are low-fi.
As well as the mods you mentioned, Steve McCormack's Mod Squad did some major mods.
His MacMod monos were very, very good, lightyears ahead of the standard item.
