new Legacy Kind of Blue mastered by Kevin Gray

I just got the new/current Sony Legacy Kind of Blue from Amazon. This has the HQ-180 RTI sticker on it. The runout groove has "KPG & MZ @ CA" etched into it. I thought that might be Kevin Gray, but I'm not sure I have a known Kevin Gray-mastered record to compare against(embarrassing, I know), so I did some sleuthing.

Discogs.com lists KPG as an alias. Acoustech's site lists "Cohearent Mastering (Kevin Gray formerly of AcousTech Mastering)" as one of the places nearby to get mastering done. But it's not called "Cohearent Mastering", it's actually "Cohearent Audio," as in "...@CA." The icing, obviously, is that the Cohearent website lists the Legacy KOB on their recent projects page.

So there you have it. The new Sony Legacy KOB is mastered by Kevin Gray. Don't know what the source was, but the fact that a top-notch dude did the mastering certainly increases the chances that it was done from the actual tapes and not from digital. I suppose even if it is digital, it's at least in capable hands.

Now I just need to clean it and give it a spin. I'll report back!
