Selector Records closing in Hickory, NC

This is very upsetting for me, as I have been buying from them since I was in high school, before the current owner took over. I have known these people for years, several of whom had made this store a permanent career choice. I am currently having to make room for hundreds of albums that they had let me put on consignment there for nearly a decade. It's interesting, in recent years I hadn't purchased as much there as I once did (I now live 90 minutes away, though I still have family there), because they no longer had the finances to stock the obscurities, and were forced to give up new vinyl four or five years ago, and I didn't need to make special trips for new releases and had pretty much mined out the used vinyl. I did, however, continue to make special orders, and turned most of my consignment income back into stock. But mostly I wanted to say goodbye to good people who ran a dying breed, a independantly owned small record store in a small town. I have copied and included their farewell memo (yes, they even e-mailed those who wished it, the weekly scheduled releases):

As of 31st of January, Selecter Records -- your hometown record store for lo these many years -- will close for good. This will come as a shock to many of you, as it did to us. The reasons? There are too many to list, honestly, but at the top of the pile would be the weak local economy and the downturn in the music industry in general. For many of you -- myself included -- this store has been your source for music since Brian and Susan Haynes opened up shop in the late '80s. I've been shopping here since before the CD age, and that's been a long frickin' time!!

Anyway, down to the cold hard facts: starting this Thursday (the 23rd) through the End, all the DVDs, CDs, records, tapes, videos, posters, and 12" vinyl will be on sale. There are bunches of collectible magazines that we've pulled out of storage. Plus the used CDs will be packed FULL with choice goodies, so it'll definitely be worth your time to come check it out. Please, come "pick over the carcass", we won't mind!!

If you have any gift certificates or credit, this is, needless to say, the time to redeem them.

If you are a comic buyer, keep hope, as Erin is busting his posterior trying to find a place to stick his comics in and maintain quality service for all the comic subscribers.

As for all of y'all, we'll miss you. All of you are our friends, not just customers. That's why we did this for so many years: for the love of the music & the love of the people who love music as much as we do. We will miss every last one of you, and we hope at least a few of you will miss us [we're not so naive as to think we're universally loved ;-) ] Thank you for all the conversations about music, politics, comics, Star Wars, basketball, or whatever you like. Most of all, thank you all for sharing parts of your lives with us. Thanks to all the employees (in no particular order: Wayne, Jeff, Jeremiah, Thomas, Amanda, Grant, Randy, Angie, Stephanie, Tommy, Matt, Max, Mark, Alan, Mike, Lea, Roger, Thad, Zach ... if I missed anyone, I'm sorry, but with age comes senility). And thanks to Brian and Susan for starting all this mess to begin with!!

For what it's worth, we encourage you to support local and live music, to continue to seek out music that moves you (and not settle for what They tell you to listen to), to continue to be the free-thinking individuals that sought out this lil' ol' record store in the first place. We will remember you all, and we hope you remember Selecter fondly.

Thank you all so very much,
Reid
