Carver C1 vs C2 vs C2

24.31.22.8

I've always been happy with my Carver C-2 preamp, so much so that I bought a C-1 when the deal was right, and another C-2 to use with some tri-amp speakers. But I've read more than one message from people who express a vigorous dislike for the C-2, so last night I killed some time listening to all three of my Carver pre-amps.

I was suprised at how the latest C-2 acquisition sounded. It was very audible, a strong difference from the other two, and not in a good way. I'm not very good at translating what I hear into keystrokes, but I'd say it was very thin sounding, almost like early digital recordings, and seemed congested. Overall, I thought it sounded like a cheap-ish car radio, with the lower midrange/upper bass missing.

There's clearly something wrong with it. If this is what other people are hearing, I can understand why they grimace when the topic of Carver pre-amps comes up.
