I recently acquired another addition to my basement collection, this the Pioneer SX-980 Receiver. I consider it to be in the "high-power" category with my SX-950 and SX-1010. Comparing the value of it with the others here, the 980 seems to be a more collectible receiver. I don't know why it is more valuable, unless it's simply because it's a later machine. Here are some points I see:- Not as much shielding in the FM section as the 1010.
- Only set up to drive 2 speaker pairs, whereas 1010 and 950 drive 3.
- Not as much power out as either 1010 or 950.
- Output devices are "strange", not TO-3 power transistors like 950 and 1010 have.I do notice that the FM section is quite sensitive. However, I don't think it's that much better than the 1010 or 950.
Anyone care to comment?
JB.
