how does the timer work on Kenwood Model Eleven?

G'day, inmates,
Can someone tell me how to use the timer on a Kenwood Model Eleven
receiver? After hand-crafting a replacement control shaft, the timer
on my fixer-upper will power the receiver on for the set time; but,
when the time runs out and the receiver shuts off, it stays off
regardless of the main power switch position. Is there some way to
set the timer knob so that the main power switch takes precedence?
I note that the timer's switch is wired in series with the main power
switch, and the wiring looks original. Unless there's something I'm
missing about how to operate the timer, it seems like it would make
more sense for the switches to be wired in parallel.
