Re: Western Electric 350B--The Ultimate 6L6?

Yes, I've heard them & compared to a few others - very good, I have seen most marked National Union, who I believe made them for WE. They are very lush sounding, good detail, deep and good bass. But for what they go for, they are far over-rated due to their rarity and the WE name. By the way, they are rated as a 6L6G is, so they won't sub in most cases for a 6L6GB/5881, 6L6GC, or definitely a KT66 or EL37.

As a 6L6G or GA goes, I think the ultimate is the Visseaux Straight bottle made in the 50's - huge sounding, deep tight bass, great detail and huge mids. Close second is the KenRad VT-115A, very powerful sounding and super cool looking. The Sylvania 6L6GA is another super tube.

In the higher rating tube, I find both the Tungsol 5881 and RCA 6L6GC black plate to be good, but very over hyped. Some people don't realize the hype and value of these don't come from audio use, but guitar people. The GE 6L6GC double side getter is better for audio and a very good tube. The very rare Sylvania 5932 double plate is a fabulous audio tube.

At the top end the Mullard EL37 is the king, with the GEC KT66 close behind. But to get really great sound from them, the plate voltage should be much higher than a 6L6GC, so in many circuits, the 6L6GC will actually give better, fuller sound.

Anyways, the WE 350B is a good tube, over-rated and overpriced, and your single should get some pretty big bucks on the Ebay circuit.
