I built the circuit with a few minor tweaks and tested it. The result is a very simple amp with a nice low distortion (~1% up to about 8W) with f2 dominating at low power and f3 increasing to about 10db below f2 at high power. Clipping is about 9 watts out, 12W power out at the anode. The effective plate resistance is about 200 ohms, resulting in a power bandwidth of 25Hz-40KHz using a Transcendar OPT.
It sounds very nice, with an overload characteristic that gets wooly without any blocking distortion or breakup. It handles dense music really well, and sounds very open and transparent on acoustic music.
So my answer to the original question is that a hybrid of SS driving a tube can be effective. The SS voltage-current converter is very linear, and the output tube is good at dissipating heat for class A operation as well as imparting a nice low level second harmonic-prominent distortion SET signature to the sound.
I like it well enough to want to build a real amp with a lower Zpri OPT, etc. for driving high sensitivity speakers.
Cheers,
Michael
