I was looking for a pair of speaker to alternate with my maggie 1.6's that would allow me more freedom with amplifiers so I could try anything for 30 watts upwards. My friendly audio pusher (called a dealer by those who don't know him well) called to say that a near new pair of Audio Physic Tempo's IV had come in and did I want a listen. After two or three weeks of playing I now have them working very nicely in my 3.2m by 5.2m room, partnered with a Meridian G08 cd player and Krell KAV400xi integrated amplifier.
To say that I'm impressed would be an understatement. Firstly they are beautifully made and are an attractive speaker that doesn't dominate a room at all. Essentially flat from 25Hz in my room, they have a coherent, transparent sound that invites listening. The midrange is particularly good with amazing levels of transparency and no obvious signs of the old metal cone problems. Tonally they're pretty neutral and while they're not the last word in macro dynamics , they easily convey the fun and life of the music I listen too. Another big plus for me is that I can now enjoy music at a much lower volume as well, something the maggies didn't really allow. And for the icing on the cake they soundstage like it's going out of fashion, and that's with an amplifier that's not that great on front to back depth.
All in all in looking for a speaker to switch with my maggies I've actually found a total replacement that only gives up image height, adds in much more, plus doesn't require big amps to drive it. (It has to be said that at 2.5 times the price of the Maggies, the AP's should perform better too. How they would compare the 3.6R's I wouldn't know, but for the price I got them for I don't care greatly either.) Very, very impressed.
Cheers,
Craig.
