RE: This Looks Like BS To Me...

If you have your eMail reader application set to display HTML messages, they know you viewed the message, which means you are a "live" target and your eMail address is worth a premium. Your address will be sold to many spammers as a result.

If you want to protect yourself you MUST set your mail app to display text only, and you can then click on a button (typically) to display the HtML if you want. But text only will not return a "bug" that tells them you read the message, which makes your address less valuable and eventually ... maybe ... you won't get as many spam messages.

How this works is there is a 1x1 pixel image in the message; too small to be seen by the naked eye. However the image is stored on a remote server. You open the message, your mail app calls for the images to be loaded and offers your address so the server knows where to send the image, and bingo ... they know you viewed the message.

So, not clicking on a url isn't enough. You have to not view the message at all, or view it as text only.
