ImgBurn installer - what can you do?

Actually folks, what is happening is that Lightning UK have decided to use OpenCandy for their install program. OpenCandy is a (shady) company that contracts with other companies to provide advertisements of their software and also installation of said software.

I am truly dismayed that the folks at Lightning UK, the makers of ImgBurn, have decided to take advantage of the users by making use of the OpenCandy installer. IMHO, this is a very bad decision on their part and it will eventually come back to haunt them. Just take a look at the Lightning UK user forum messages to see how royally pissed-off many of them are.

Here is how the ImgBurn/OpenCandy installer works:

1) You initiate an install of ImgBurn 2.5.8.

2) The OpenCandy installer contacts OpenCandy's servers and decides what other programs are offered to you for installation along with ImgBurn. And this can change from moment to moment. The 1st time you try to install ImgBurn, the OpenCandy installer may offer up the Ask.com toolbar for installation. The next time you try to install ImgBurn, the OpenCandy installer may offer up the Amazon.com toolbar for installation. This is NOT controlled by ImgBurn, OpenCandy makes this decision. And their decision is guided by which advertiser has paid them the most money.

3) Many, if not most, of the programs being offered for installation by OpenCandy use deceptively worded installation screens. They do this so that most of you will simply click Next and inadvertently install software that you do not want. They also use tricks like "greying out" options that are actually available. The worst of these is the option for an Advanced Install. It is greyed out, thus making you believe that it is not available for selection, when in fact it is.

The ONLY way to successfully navigate the ImgBurn install without having unwanted software being installed is to choose the (greyed out) Advanced Install button. This is VERY deceptive and goes against the rules established by Microsoft for user interface screens.

Technically, Lightning UK (the makers of ImgBurn) do not bundle ANY additional software with ImgBurn except for the OpenCandy installer. It is the OpenCandy installer that is doing the nasty here. But Lightning UK are tacitly endorsing OpenCandy's shady business practices, and that is truly shameful.

The bottom line is that it IS possible to install ImgBurn only using the OpenCandy installer. But they use deceptive wording and non-standard user interface elements to trick you into installing additional software. IMHO, the owners of OpenCandy should be publicly horse whipped and then have their fingers cut off so that they can never create another piece of software. Fuckin' pirates.

My recommendation is to forgo installing ImgBurn 2.5.8 and install an earlier version that does not make use of the OpenCandy installer. I also recommend that you contact Lightning UK and let them know that their use of OpenCandy is bad for their business and an insult to their longtime users. I have included a link for an earlier version of ImgBurn (2.5.7) for your convenience. Additionally, here is the link to Lightning UK's User Forum where you can make you concerns/disgust known:
