Atlantic Starr, "Masterpiece"

25 years ago, grunge had taken over, so the cleanly-produced R&B single, "Masterpiece," by Atlantic Starr, really stood out. Okay, so the wannabe hippies of UC Santa Cruz hated it. But my three college housemates and I were hosting a get-together, and my urban friend from Daly City, Andrea, brought over some dance music, new jack swing, and love songs, including "Masterpiece."

Harking back to 1987's "Always," some girl in blue wistfully asked, "How come they don't make 'em like this any more?"

After all, it had been half a decade since Atlantic Starr's "Always" set the modern R&B standard. In those days, and in music terms, 5 years was an eternity.

Sometime late in the Spring '92 quarter, Andrea and I went back to the Bay Area. At the Stonestown Tower Records, we were in the CD singles section. I picked up Atlantic Starr's "Masterpiece."

During the halcyon days of the summer of '92, my friends would come over to my place. Among other things, the stereo [NAD, Sony, Muse, Paradigm, AQ] brought them in. Yeah, yeah, their diet consisted of a lot of rock. But they did like to slow things down, and everyone loved "Masterpiece." Swaying to that song brought me and Patricia closer.

I lent that CD single out to some girl(s), and never did get it back. In that case, the girls are just as bad as the audiophiles, who borrow and never return stuff :-)
