I don't care for any of the high-res Faure Chamber music available at the moment, so I downloaded Hyperion's Domus Quartet in 16 bit.
I've always loved their performances of Faure and I recall the recording being unusually high-quality.
Well, the performance was as satisfying as ever, but the sound was as flat as a pancake.
24 bit (or DSD) sampling absolutely does not guarantee a "perfect" or superior recording, and 16 bit doesn't guarantee a "bad," lifeless recording, but man--I remember Hyperion being the standard-bearer for sound. Just my humble observation.
Is hi-res a scam? I'll have to download a few more must-have recordings from the 80's before taking a side in the argument.
