I may not have had tinnitus but a kind of ringing in my ears - I tend to get it if I have too much diet soda and caffeine. Diet Soda was actually giving me electric shocks in the left side of my head almost knocking me to the ground. Yes I drank a lot of it.
So I stopped that completely 2 years ago and have never had a recurrence. I went to regular sugar soda instead - and over the past year I have lost 35lbs. Cut my coffee to one one in the mornings and none on weekends. I also now make sure I drink at least 2 full pitchers of water everyday. Especially a glass of water before bed and as soon as I wake up.
Your experience may have nothing to do with diet but perhaps some of this is internal related. Having a low dose aspirin thins the blood - I have found this (now and then) helps a lot of things for me.
If you are a soda drinker try and get the soda with sugar not High Fructose corn syrup. Probably reducing salt is a good plan too.
