EPIC NOOB amplifier question! 2 channel amp - 5.1 system?

Hi. So, I was wondering about the following.

I have all the speakers for a 5.1 surround sound system. I also have 2 amplifiers to choose from: some Sony micro system thing (with 5.1 inputs) and a beast Cambridge Audio A1 mk3 (with only 2 speaker inputs).

Previously, I've used the Cambridge Audio amp. with 2 speakers, and it's worked great. However, I want to upgrade to a 5.1 setup.

So, I have 2 options. I could jam all the speakers into the (powerful enough) Cambridge amp., but then it wouldn't be true 5.1. Or, I could connect the speakers properly to the Sony micro-HIFI thing, but that wouldn't sound as nice.

1) So, my real question is, can I have the Cambridge amplifier control the inputs (computer, tuner, and CD player, through red and white cables), and have the Sony HIFI thing control all the speakers. So the Cambridge would do all the amplifying from the inputs, control volume, balance, bass, treble, etc., and it would somehow be connected to all the speakers in a true 5.1 setup, using the Sony thing. The sony thing would be essentially acting as a splitter.

2) Is this possible?

3) Would it sound good?

4) Is there a miraculous (cheap, please!) adaptor/splitter of sorts to help me?

Sorry for this epic N00B question, but help me, please!
