Re: Listening to two DVD-Audios: Bach/St. Matthew Passion/Harnoncourt (Teldec) and Mozart/Figaro (Naxos)

*** Who cares, Christine ***

Well, I do.

*** Maybe your Panny's lack of DVD-A time-alignment is doing it a complete disservice in multichannel ***

It does have time alignment (and I think I've mentioned this to you before). But since my speakers are equidistant (within 5%) i don't need time alignment, so i've left all the distance settings at "default".

Time alignment is actually a poor man's version of room correction. There are some that argue it's not really effective - since it only compensates for the phase of sound coming directly from the speakers, but 80% of what we hear are reflected sound, which won't be compensated. Having equidistant speakers is a far better solution.

If you really care about this and can't have equidistant speakers, I would suggest you invest some money in digital room correction (which will compensate for the actual condition of your room, including reflected waves). I'm planning to experiment with 2-channel room correction once i get some time, probably over Xmas. i have bought all the hardware, including an ECM8000 measurement microphone, and pretty much have all the software.

*** And now that you have all those m-ch power amps, there's really no excuse for not having a decent DVD-A / universal player ***

Actually, i don't have any "m-ch power amps" (m-ch usually meaning 3 or more channels in one chassis). All the amps are dual mono.

And what makes you think I don't have a "decent" player? Oh I forgot, you think it's "cheap" :-)

*** How about the Denon DVD-A1XV? ***

I was slated to review this player, but haven't received it yet. If I do, I'll let you know. I will say though, none of the Denon players (including yours) have impressed me as much as my current player (except for the DVD-A1 or DVD-9000 - if i ever see that on the second hand market i will buy one - i'm still kicking myself for not buying one when I had the chance). I have compared all these players side by side - have you?

Remember, I can buy Denon players essentially at manufacturer cost. The fact I haven't bought any says something. I'm not saying they are bad players - I gave them all positive reviews (apart from one or two), but I happen to really like my current player.
