I think you will find supporters of both players. Both are very good. The knock typically on the Sony CDP-XA20ES is that the US model only has an optical digital output. It is standard for a single-disc CD player in this price class to have a coaxial digital output. A lot of quality external DACs favor the coaxial digital connection. The sad thing about this with the 'XA20ES is that it functions as an excellent transport by virtue of the spindle and brass weight design. Interestingly, the European version of the 'XA20ES has a coaxial digital output and a voltage selector switch on the back panel, so it can be used in the US out of the box. Unfortunately, I know of no easy way to get a European 'XA20ES in the US. If you are in Europe, then you don't have to worry about this, of course. The DAC in the 'XA20ES is not all-world, but is considered competitive in its price class. So, the 'XA20ES is a capable player if you intend to use the analog outputs. If you are going to use it as a transport and are in the US, think about whether you can use the optical digital output.
I am less familiar with the Marantz CD-6000OSE, but it is a good player from what I have read. It has a coaxial digital output, and the transport is more of the standard design relative to the Sony 'XA20ES.
Again, I don't think you can go wrong with either player. I'll give you some places to buy from in the US. I believe the standard price on the Marantz is $500. That's what www.hifi.com, an authorized Marantz dealer, sells it for. While the Sony retails for $700, I know that Oade Bros. in Georgia, an authorized Sony mail order dealer, sells it for $435. They have incredible prices on Sony products, especially when you consider that they are authorized. I've ordered from them twice, and they are great. Call them at 1-912-228-0093 or 1-912-228-4480 if you decide to go with the Sony (they don't sell Marantz). The only catch with Oade Bros. is that they charge a restocking fee if you return an item because you simply don't like it (i.e., with the box opened). However, J&R Music World, also an authorized Sony dealer, often will match Oade Bros. on price, and J&R has a 30-day, no-nonsense return policy. I'd call J&R at 1-800-221-8180 to see if they will match Oade Bros.' price on the 'XA20ES (J&R doesn't sell Marantz either). hifi.com has a 45-day, no-nonsense return policy. I am telling you all this because in the end, you really should demo both players in your home to decide which one you like best. J&R and hifi.com will allow you to do this risk-free. By the way, hifi.com sells Sony equipment, but they don't show Sony ES components on their web site. hifi.com doesn't discount much anyway.
Good luck!
